It was back in our late twenties, just after finishing firefighter training, when I first noticed her volunteer efforts at the local community center following a large apartment fire. Even then, her quiet strength and empathy shone through as she comforted displaced families. While our careers took off in different directions helping those in need, Jessica quickly became my port in any storm. After the hardest of shifts pulling survivors from burning rubble, her reassuring embrace and listening ear were my salvation. In turn, I supported her social work assisting underserved groups overcome personal crises. Now in our early 60s, I arranged a quiet dinner under the stars to celebrate our long life together. Gazing into Jessica's smiling eyes, filled with the same compassion that first drew me in all those years ago, I thanked her for being the bravery in my own soul. As long as I have this amazing woman by my side, I know our community will always come first.
