For Jan's 35th birthday, I decided to go all out with a surprise party. I spent weeks planning, even convincing him we were just having a quiet dinner at home. On the big day, I sent him out for "emergency groceries" while our friends snuck in. When he returned, instead of yelling "Surprise!", everyone was frantically trying to put out a small fire! Turns out, the vintage popcorn machine I'd rented for a fun touch had overheated. Jan walked in to see me, covered in flour (my attempt to smother the flames), surrounded by laughing friends and a slightly smoky living room. After the initial shock, Jan burst out laughing. He said it was the best, most memorable birthday ever. We ended up ordering pizza and spending the night swapping embarrassing stories. Sometimes, it's the imperfect moments that become the most perfect memories.
