My work revolves around the beauty of the ocean, but Hector fills our lives with melodies and love.
My work as a marine biologist has allowed me to experience the grandeur and mystery of the ocean each day. However, it is Hector's music and companionship that fill our home with life. As we celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, I marvel at how our long-distance love has stood the test of time. We met while I was conducting research in Miami and Hector was touring Florida with his band. Even living on opposite coasts, our connection grew deeper through long phone calls and letters. On his rare days off, Hector would fly across the country just to spend time together. I'll never forget the surprise when he suddenly appeared one moonlit evening on my usual beach. As waves lapped at our feet, Hector poured his soul into a love song before getting down on one knee. Through happy tears, I enthusiastically said yes to spending our lives joined as one. Though careers pulled us to different cities, our commitment strengthened during periods apart. Video calls, weekend visits and a lot of patience saw us through 35 years of marriage. As the sunset paints the ocean tonight, I feel grateful for the family and adventures we've shared together through all the distances.
