Joan and I never imagined our lives would turn out like this. As high school sweethearts, we talked dreamed of traveling the world once we graduated. But life had other plans. I got accepted to the local college while Joan fell pregnant our senior year. We decided to elope rather than disrupt our families. After I started my desk job and Joan began working at a daycare, our little household grew steadily over the years. Now as our youngest heads to college, we find ourselves empty nesters celebrating 30 years of marriage. To reconnect, I planned a weekend getaway back to our old haunts. We laughed revisiting the diner where we had our first date, then held hands walking the beach like we did as teens. Sharing a picnic under the stars, Joan thanked me for the stable home I provided. As we slow danced under strings of lights like at our wedding, I told Joan how proud I am of the life we built. Though our travels never happened, this quiet love we’ve shared is its own adventure. I feel grateful we got to live our dreams through raising our family, and look forward to what's next just us.
