My little brother Jacob has always been stubbornly determined to do things his own way. So when he called to tell me he'd finished his five-year engineering degree while also holding down a job, I knew this was a big accomplishment. Jacob has worked so hard over the years between classes, assignments and deadlines. I wanted to find a way to recognize his achievement. On graduation day, I could see the surprise on Jacob's face when he opened the packaging. "Thanks Em, I really appreciate the gesture," he said, smiling as he received it. Watching him shake hands on stage to accept his diploma, I was filled with pride. All those late nights, takeout dinners at his desk and thermoses of coffee had paid off. Even as Jacob embarks on his career, I hope he continues striving towards his goals just as determinedly as he completed his studies. My stubborn little brother did it. Though this chapter ends, I know Jacob's story is just beginning.
