We’d planned a casual winter hike to our favorite overlook
We’d planned a casual winter hike to our favorite overlook—one we’d visited dozens of times over the past two years, usually to escape city noise. I thought this trip was no different: I packed extra socks, he brought our usual thermos of spiced hot chocolate, and we complained about the early wake-up call the whole drive up. When we reached the clearing, Sam paused to adjust his backpack. I turned to take a photo of the snow-dusted pines, and when I looked back, he was holding a small box. He said, “I’ve been carrying this around for three weeks. I want to keep doing this with you.” I opened it, saw the ring, and said yes before I could even think. It wasn’t a fairy tale. We’d been together for two and a half years, and marriage was just something we’d joked about over dinner, never something we’d sat down to plan seriously. But now, finally, stopping the jokes and starting the real thing.
