Emily and I met 10 years ago while volunteering at a homeless shelter in the city. Our connection was instantaneous. When marriage became legal for all in 2015, we decided it was finally our time. We chose to get married in my family's gorgeous backyard garden. Emily looked breathtaking in a lightweight lace dress. Local musicians played jazz standards as our guests enjoyed cocktails in the yard. Father Ryan presided over the intimate ceremony in which we expressed how much our decade together has meant. After being proclaimed wives, we danced joyfully to "When The Saints Go Marching In". The reception featured all of our favorite New Orleans dishes like gumbo and beignets. It was the most beautiful day, celebrating our love surrounded by greenery, music and community - a day I will cherish forever.
