My wife Mia and I aren't usually big on Valentine's Day, but this year was different. We'd been trying for a baby for a while with no luck, and it had been tough on both of us. Mia surprised me with a small gift box that morning. Inside was a beautiful pair of cufflinks, but what really got me was the card. She'd written about how proud she was of us for staying strong through all the ups and downs. She mentioned that the cufflinks were for me to wear at all our future celebrations - graduations, weddings, you name it. It was her way of saying she believed we'd get there someday. I got all choked up reading it. Later that evening, I gave her my gift - a delicate necklace with a small sapphire pendant. I told her it was to remind her how strong and brilliant she is, even on the hard days. We ended up having a quiet night in, talking about our hopes for the future. It wasn't flashy or over-the-top, but it was exactly what we needed. Those cufflinks and that necklace mean more to us than any grand gesture ever could.
