Daniel and I have always dreamed of eloping spontaneously, so last winter we decided to fly to Switzerland for our wedding weekend. We hadn’t told anyone of our secret plans and spent a few days exploring the snowy alpine villages. On a sunny but cold afternoon in the Swiss Alps overlooking craggy mountain peaks, just the two of us stood bundled up gazing at the snowcapped mountains as we recited personal vows to one another with our breath visible in the frigid air. After sealing our marriage with a kiss, we went from town to town celebrating with mugs of gluhwein and traditional Swiss fondue. Flying home as husband and wife with our secret intact, we enjoyed private memories of those magical few days playing in the snow, cozying up by the fire, and taking in scenic vistas. A few months later, we threw a party for close friends and family, showing photos of ourselves in snow boots trudging through powder and stopping traffic at roadside cafes. As we told the story of eloping abroad in the mountains, everyone understood why the Swiss Alps held such meaning for us spontaneous souls in love. Our intimate wedding weekend away in a winter wonderland forged memories we will cherish forever.
